Costa Rica History

#3

The beautiful country Costa Rica definitely had their fair share of complicated history which helped them become what they are today. Christopher Columbus first stumbled upon Costa Rica in 1502 and named it “Rich Coast” after during his visit he was presented with gold. Several decades later after neglect the Spanish established their first settlement in Costa Rica in 1564. After that Costa Rica also being called Cartago was thought to be relatively poor and sometimes forgotten. With Costa Rica being such a small part of the Spanish empire they had ties with Mexico; and when Mexico declared independence from Spain in 1821 so did Costa Rica along with several of their Central America neighbors. After declaring their independence they named themselves “First Mexican Empire” which soon collapsed in 1823. After the collapse Costa Rica became a founding member of the United Provinces of Central America which stayed afloat for the next 23 years but not without political turmoil. Eventually all of the constitutive countries broke apart to form sovereign nations including Costa Rica. The people who settled there were mostly white and mestizo with the primary language being spanish. Spain until this day still has lots of influence on Costa Rica such as the spirit of the ticos and ticas.

  1. This seems like the beginning of post and feels very condensed. I think you could have stretched this out a bit more and explained some finer details of Costs Rica's history. Along with some pictures, grammar correction, and breaking up your one paragraph into several more, you could have had a great post.
